Smoking a cigarette, Jack looked up at the starry sky. He remembered his life before becoming a police officer—cooking and serving food at the J&J diner, joking with his brother, watching the beautiful waitress Rose, and gifting her fragrant roses secretly plucked from the neighbor’s garden... that time always returned to him as memories.

His eyes stung. He always told himself he had to be strong, but his heart had betrayed him. Jack looked up at the long, pale moonlight in hopes of forgetting that pain.
